The Hungarian uprising in 1956 precipitated Ritter's bid for freedom and safety in England at age seventeen. Ritter spent his early years studying the Masters and learning their techniques.

The painting was originally owned by Schroeder's grandfather (Hickson's father), German-born Valentine Schwarz and was described as Schwarz' 'favorite picture'; most-likely the painting was brought from Germany by Schwartz in the 18th century settling in Frederick Town, Maryland
