Signed Fred Pye - Rocky Seascape Painting, Maine; Oil on Canvas
Fred Pye (b. 1882 England d. 1964 Ogunquit, ME) Oil on canvas; large and dramatic rocky seascape painting depicting a rocky shore (most likely Ogunquit, ME) with crashing and cresting waves under a partly sunny sky with billowing clouds; signed lower right; good condition with some craquelure in upper right portion of sky; relined; within the original white-washed and gilt wooden frame with beige linen slip.
Fred Pye attended the Julian and Colorossi academies in Paris. Shortly after completing his training, he held an exhibition wherein the French Government purchased one of his paintings entitled Mer Agiteo in 1926. The painting was hung in the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris. Pye emigrated to the U.S., living in Cincinnati, OH, and Ogunquit, ME. It was there where he became artist-in-residence at the Cliff House, producing a prolific body of work. He is known primarily for the dynamic expressiveness of his landscapes and seascapes.
