this large ribbed and cylindrical Japanese shell-game box with domed lid decorated overall with Maki-e (gold lacquered) foliate wreaths and stylized flower heads and incised brass mounts; raised on four splayed supports; good overall antique condition with even wear and rubbing to surface; some touch-ups to areas of missing lacquer; minor crack to underside of lid and inside bottom; now lacking rope.

Paul T. Frankl, October 14, 1886 – March 21,1958 / Johnson Furniture Co. 1908 - 1983, Grand Rapids, Michigan

An émigré from Austria, Frankl settled in New York in 1914 and quickly saw a country awash in reproductions of uncomfortable European styles. From the start, Frankl took a different approach, designing sleek, unadorned pieces that reflected advances in American technology and changes in culture. In the early 1950s Johnson Furniture Company produced several lines by Paul Frankl, among them the “Contemporary” line, incorporating an early use of biomorphic designs.

Modern, inside-out Paul T. Frankl's sleek simplicity gave rise to a California look.

These lamps are a perfect example of the extraordinary quality associated with the Frederick Cooper Lamp Company established in Chicago in 1923. Frederick was a Chicago artist and was fascinated with the new invention of lamps and tried to incorporate the elements and flavors of American architecture of that time which has been carried on through the generations.
