Sasha Makovkin typically threw pieces which his wife Susan decorated. His work ranged from functional stoneware forms to sculpture and architectural installations. Makovkin dug the stoneware clay he used for his functional pieces from Mt Tamalpias. Long before it was popular, Makovkin fired his work in a diesel fueled kiln using a mixture of used motor oils. 1954-1957 Heath Ceramics, Sausalito, California; 1966-1970 College of the Redwoods, Mendocino, California; 1988-1989 Artists (with his wife Susan) in Residence at Princeton Seminary, New Jersey

with giltwood neck above a turned columnar body of nicely figured Carrara marble all over a giltwood base; good vintage condition with minor chipping to edges; re-wired; neck and base re-gilded

the round mirrored top with incised edge resting on an elegant gilt-iron base with interlaced openwork apron raised on cabriole supports; a similar example in "Les Decorateurs des Anne's 40" page 107; unmarked; wear to gilding and mirror surface; antiquing to plate

the rectangular dish top with raised molded edge above a plain frieze apron above a rolled perimeter molding; raised on elegantly-shaped cabriole supports with shell carved knees all ending in pad feet; overall good sturdy construction with nice color; refinished with minor even wear

Made from Belgian bluestone with a honed finish and embedded with fossils, the table is comprised of a thick round top with dupont edge and baluster-form support on an octagonal plinth.
